The black-tailed skimmer dragonfly (Orthetrum cancellatum), is a European & Asian dragonfly that is prevalent in nearly all of Europe, and can always be seen here on lake Morii throughout the day.
The Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra), is found in the waterways and coasts of Europe, has a diet mainly of fish, and is strongly territorial. These beautiful but elusive animals can sometimes be seen at dusk going for a swim.
The Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus), are water birds noted for their colourful markings & elaborate mating display. They nest & breed on the water’s edge and are excellent swimmers and divers, feeding mainly on fish underwater. Young Grebe’s have striped markings and the adults teach them by carrying them on their backs and diving.
The Common Tern (Sterna hirundo), is a seabird with a large population, huge breeding range and unlike most bird species, there are no significant differences between the sexes. Though it is classed as a seabird they can also be found on freshwater lakes, such as Lake Morii, and feeds by plunge-diving for small fish.
The Mute Swan (Cygnus olor), is a species of Swan and native to much of Eurasia. The name ‘mute’ derives from it being less vocal than other Swan species. This large swan is wholly white in plumage with an orange beak bordered with black. The Mute Swan has been seen in Autumn at Lake Morii and stays for about 2 months.
The Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), is a widespread member of the cormorant family of seabirds. Dependent on the wide range of species, it’s weight varies from 1.5 kg to 5.3 kg, males being typically larger and heavier than females. It feeds on fish from the sea, estuaries and from freshwater rivers and lakes including Lake Morii.
The Eurasian Coot (Fulica atra), is a member of the rail and crake bird family, and breeds on freshwater lakes and ponds. It is largely black except for the white frontal shield on the beak & head, and is a swimming species with partial webbing on its long strong toes. The coot is a noisy bird known for its trumpeting calls, often given at night.
The Caspian Gull (Larus cachinnans), is a large gull and a member of the herring and lesser black-backed gull family. It typically nests on flat, low-lying ground by water and starts breeding from early April. They are scavengers and predators with a very varied diet. During the breeding season, they even eat rodents such as ground squirrels, flying some distance to find them.
The Mallard, or wild duck (Anas platyrhynchos), is a dabbling duck that breeds in temperate zones almost worldwide. The male birds (drakes) have a glossy green head and are grey on wings and belly while the females (hens or ducks) have mainly brown-speckled plumage. Mallard’s are a very adaptable species, being able to live and even thrive in urban areas.
This broadleaf cattail reed, or (Typha latifolia), is a perennial herbaceous plant in the genus Typha. It is found as a native plant species in North and South America, Europe,
Eurasia, and Africa.
